Federal Public Defender – Western District of North Carolina

Summer 2021 Internship Opportunities

The Federal Public Defender in the Western District of North Carolina is currently recruiting for qualified and committed interns that reflect the diversity of our community.   Our offices in Asheville and Charlotte zealously represent indigent clients charged with federal crimes.  We are seeking law students with a passion to protect and defend the rights of our indigent clients, have strong research and writing skills, and an impeccable work ethic, who are interested in working in our Charlotte office.

Interns will experience the highly rewarding work of indigent criminal defense.  They will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of assignments including research and drafting motions, legal memoranda, client and witness interviewing, investigation, and assisting attorneys in preparing jury trials. We require a minimum commitment of 30-35 hours per week.  Depending on the state of the COVID-19 pandemic, this internship may be a mixture of telework and office/court time, or completely telework.

These positions are unpaid.  However, our officecan apply for a Hon. James B. McMillan Legal Fellowship for one interested summer intern accepted into our program.  This fellowship focuses on students who desire a career in the non-profit or government sector and who have ties to Mecklenburg County.  The maximum award will be up to $3,500.  More information about the McMillan Legal Fellowship, and the required application material, will shortly be available at www.meckbar.org.  See the Guidelines for Applications/Law Students section.

Applications must be received by Monday, February 1, 2021.   An application consists of a cover letter explaining your interest in our organization, a resume and a brief writing sample.  All documents should be emailed to WDNCapplication@fd.org.  If a student would like to be considered for the Hon. James B. McMillan Legal Fellowship, the additional application material must be included in the initial submission.
