Charlotte-

As of December 1, 2005, Judge Graham C. Mullen is no longer Chief Judge in the district. He has taken “senior” status. Judge Richard L. Voorhees will serve as Chief Judge until June 2006 when Judge Robert J.  Conrad will take over the administrative duties of the court. Judge Mullen will continue presiding over his civil docket and retain his current criminal docket.

Asheville-

Judge Lacy H. Thornburg recently returned from a wonderful vacation in South America.  He toured Chile, Peru, Argentina and the nightclubs of Brazil!

U.S. Probation Officer Robert Ferguson left the ranks of bachelorhood in October.

Other Training Programs

Annual CLE Program

In addition to the monthly brown bag CJA Panel Meetings, this office will sponsor an annual CLE program in conjunction with the Federal Public Defenders of the Middle District of North Carolina each May. Next year’s program will again be in Asheville. The dates and topics will be announced in the future.

CJA Panel Training

The Defender Training Branch of the Office of Defender Services also sponsors several training programs for CJA panel attorneys which are free of charge.  The 2006 programs are: Winning Strategies seminars on February 9-11 in Miami Beach and on June 8-10 in San Diego; Sentencing Advocacy Workshop on March 2-4 in Miami Beach; Law and Technology on April 20-22 in Boston and on July 27-29 in Chicago;  Complex Litigation seminar in Atlanta (date to be announced); and Appellate Writing  Workshop on August 30-September 1 in Washington, DC.  Information on these programs can be found on the Defender Training Branch website, www.fd.org and soon on our own website, www.fdwnc.org.
